WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Consumer goods giant Wal-Mart and its best-selling drug company CVS will launch their generic versions of the prescription drug Viagra on Friday, the U. S. health insurer said.
The new generic versions, called Revatio, will cost as little as $5 a pill, a spokesman for the drug maker said.
“We are very excited about the launch of the generics,” said John D. Hekma, a spokesman for the American consumer group IMS Health. “This is a major step forward in lowering costs for American consumers.”
Rival generics are already on the market and are available as generic versions of the brand-name drug Pfizer’s blockbuster drug Viagra.
CVS, the company’s biggest pharmacy, said in a statement that it would give Pfizer permission to market the new generic versions in the United States.
The company said it is evaluating the new products and has not made any public statements about them.
The announcement comes just five months after the U. Food and Drug Administration found that prescription drugs are no more effective for treating heart problems than non-prescription drugs.
The agency did not immediately return a request for comment.
CVS said it was working on a new drug for high blood pressure that was expected to be available by mid-April.
CVS spokeswoman Lyndsay Meyer said she does not have a comment from CVS on whether or not the company is working on the new drug.
The company, which sells generic versions of its popular erectile dysfunction drug Levitra and generic of Levitra and Cialis, is seeking approval to market an alternative, said spokeswoman Sharon Ziehrink.
Rival drugs are generally more affordable than their brand-name counterparts.
The new generic version of Viagra, sold as Revatio, costs about $5.00 a pill, or less than $15 a pill, while a cheaper generic version, called Cialis, could cost as little as $3.70 a pill.
Generic drugs are approved to treat a range of conditions, including heart problems, high blood pressure, and a condition called peripheral arterial disease, said Dr. Andrew Dudum, a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic.
The drug company has also received approval for a cheaper generic version of Lipitor, which was approved to treat high cholesterol but was also approved for a different use.
Cialis, which can cost about $1.50 a pill, is the least expensive of the three drugs. It also has been approved by the FDA for the treatment of hypertension.
The drug maker, Pfizer, said it expects Revatio to cost less than $100 a pill.
The company, which is based in Cincinnati, Ohio, is looking to get approval from the FDA to market an alternative to the brand-name drug Viagra.
Shares of Pfizer rose 2.3 percent to $16.07, up 0.5 percent, to $13.58 in trade.
Pfizer said the company has no plans to launch Revatio in the U.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Consumer goods giant Wal-Mart and its best-selling drug company CVS will launch their generic versions of the prescription drug Viagra on Friday, the U.Viagra, also known as sildenafil citrate, is a popular medication used to treat erectile dysfunction (ED) and symptoms associated with both conditions. It works by increasing blood flow to the penis, helping men achieve and maintain an erection.
Viagra mainly acts as a PDE5 inhibitor, enhancing blood flow to the penis and facilitating an erection when sexual stimulation occurs. Its effectiveness stems from its ability to inhibit the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5), which is responsible for breaking down cyclic GMP into its active metabolites, cGMP and nNOS.
Viagra's structure and mechanism of action are similar to that of penicillin, providing effective coverage for its active ingredient, sildenafil citrate. These similarities emphasize the importance of considering the individual's specific needs.
Before starting Viagra, it's crucial to consult your doctor to discuss any contraindications or precautions. Here are some key points to keep in mind:
The pharmaceutical industry has made significant investments in Viagra, which often comes with a range of pharmaceutical benefits. For example, Viagra is widely prescribed for ED by healthcare professionals and is sometimes used to treat pulmonary hypertension, a condition that affects the arteries in the lungs. Other potential risks include potential drug interactions, and it's crucial to monitor your health regularly to address any concerns and monitor for any side effects.
The way in which Viagra works involves the interaction of phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) with phosphodiesterase type 4 (PDE4). When nitric oxide flows to the corpus cavernosum of the penis, it breaks down cyclic GMP, causing an erection. PDE5 is responsible for breaking down cyclic GMP, which can be produced by various enzymes, such as cyclic GMP-specific phosphodiesterase 5 (Cgpr5).
By blocking PDE5, nitric oxide also exerts its effects, leading to a decrease in blood flow to the penis, facilitating an erection. PDE5 is responsible for breaking down cyclic GMP, which helps to produce erections. By blocking PDE5, Viagra helps to maintain an erection, leading to an overall improved sexual experience.
Nitric oxide plays a crucial role in regulating blood flow to the penis, which helps achieve and maintain an erection. When nitric oxide flows, it breaks down cyclic GMP, causing an erection. PDE5 is a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor, reducing the level of cyclic GMP. This inhibition helps to maintain an erection and prevent symptoms associated with erectile dysfunction (ED).
The drug's ability to act locally in the blood stream supports its ability to reach target tissues and enhance nitric oxide's effects. This local distribution ensures a steady level of nitric oxide in the body, which can help maintain an erection.
In the wake of the death of his beloved wife, the husband of a dead woman, Dr. Diana Domingue, who had been a specialist in the field of endocrine disorders, has died from a heart attack while travelling from her home in Palermo.
The 19-year-old doctor was first prescribed the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra when he was 14 years old, which can lead to complications from underlying heart problems, such as low blood pressure and heart failure.
“I know there are many causes for this,” Dr. Domingue said. “But the majority are common and treatable.”
The woman died after a heart attack while taking the drug for a month.
It is believed that the cause of death was a heart attack. Domingue, who worked as a consultant cardiologist at the University Hospital in Palermo, Italy, had been suffering from hypertension.
Dr. Diana Domingue had also suffered from other heart issues. “I was told this was a normal part of my life, but there was no way to tell you that it was anything more than this,” he said.
Diana Domingue was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and suffered from chronic kidney disease.
He had been treating the condition for the past decade but was unsure of what it was.
“I told my wife, ‘We’ve had two heart attacks, and all these are related to diabetes,” he said.
He said he was unaware of how serious the heart attacks were and the long-term complications that could arise. “I know there are many other causes, but it was only when she was diagnosed that we knew she was suffering from heart disease.”
He said his wife had been taking the drug for a year and he was told it had been the “gold standard”.
Diana Domingue said the treatment was for about three months and was not successful. “I was told I had to stop taking it. It was quite difficult,” he said.
The patient died from a heart attack on April 7, 2015.
Diana Domingue said he had previously prescribed Viagra to patients who had suffered from congestive heart failure and hypertension.
“I was told it was nothing,” he said. “But it was a lot of heart work that helped me to know what it was and was not what I was supposed to have.”
Domingue, who worked at the University Hospital in Palermo, Italy, suffered from chronic kidney disease.
“I was told there was no way to tell you that it was anything more than this,” he said.
He was given a prescription for Viagra at a clinic in Palermo.
He told the clinic that he had suffered from heart failure but had never experienced a heart attack. He said his doctor had advised him that he should avoid the drug. “I had told my wife that I should take a heart attack drug, but she said, ‘You need Viagra.’ ”
He said he had no other options other than to go to the doctor’s office. “I decided to go to her and see the doctor,” he said.
